I had been using a GAIAM mat that my daughter had and being a big guy, it just was not thick enough to protect my knees from hurting on my hardwood floors. It was a nice mat and I have no issues with it - it is what it is, a thin 4mm mat that could work for many people. I needed something thicker. I opted for the thickest I could find. I wanted a cork mat and still might get one because I think cork is a cool material to use in a yoga mat, I just need to find the right brand, but instead I went with an industry leader and went for the #Manduka Pro in Sage Green. I am very happy with this mat. Finally, my knees have the support they need and I can do poses without them hurting. My daughter is a yoga instructor (and a fitness instructor of other types - HIIT, Kickboxing, etc) so she provided some guidance in getting the mat. I thought it was interesting that I needed to prepare the surface of the mat by liberally applying sea salt. So here's a picture of that:
I let that sit for 24 hours and that's apparently to make the surface more grippy. We'll see how that works. Manduka says that the best way to break a mat in is through use so I'll definitely be using the mat more than I did the old one.
